  93. Incident Description
  94. On MM-DD-YY at approximately 00:00 the suspect reached over the counter
  95. of the cashier's desk in housewares and took Ms. Andrews handbag. The
  96. suspect was seen taking the escalator to the main floor. Officer Carnes,
  97. who was off duty at the time, witnessed the theft, gave chase and arrested
  98. the suspect on the sidewalk immediately in front of the store.
  99. The suspect was taken to the security office and interviewed by Officer
  100. Carnes. Police were called and the suspect was taken away.
  101. Officer Carnes noted a description of the purse and contents and
  102. returned the items to Ms. Andrews.  Ms. Andrews signed an Evidence Receipt.
  103. Incident Investigation Summary
  104. Ms. Andrews, a cashier in housewares in the Southside Store, had her
  105. purse stolen from beneath the cash counter while she was distracted with
  106. a customer. An off duty police officer, Carnes, witnessed the incident
  107. and gave chase. He arrested a suspect just outside the store and
  108. returned to the security office where the suspect was interviewed. The
  109. suspect admitted to stealing the purse. He was taken away by responding
  110. police officer Knowles and charged.

  112. STATEMENT OF MS. ANDREWS, VICTIM
  113. On MM-DD-YY at 00:00 hours I heard someone yell "STOP". I looked up and
  114. saw a man, whom I now know to be police officer Carnes, running after a
  115. man who was carrying a woman's purse in his hand. I saw that my purse
  116. was gone. It was then I realized it was my purse that the man was
  117. carrying. The purse was blue leather, about 9" by 12" with a top
  118. opening. The clasp had my initials on it, "L.A.". The purse contained
  119. personal items such as my driving license and some credit cards as well
  120. as $350 in cash. The cash was made up of two $100 and three $50 bills.
  121. The purse was worth about $150.
  122. STATEMENT OF GREG JOHNSON, SUSPECT
  123. This is a copy of the interview statement taken by Police Officer
  124. Carnes.
  125. I did not plan on stealing the purse. I was in the store to buy a
  126. present for my wife. I went to the cashier to ask a question. The

  128. cashier ignored me, she was in a deep conversation with another
  129. customer. As I was waiting, I saw the purse just sitting there. I don't
  130. know what came over me - I just leaned over and grabbed it and started
  131. to walk away. I heard someone shout "STOP" and then I ran out of the
  132. store. I was caught by someone just outside the store. The person
  133. identified himself as Police Officer Carnes. He said he was arresting me
  134. for stealing and asked me to come back into the store with him. I'm
  135. sorry I took the purse, and I want to apologise to everyone for causing
  136. trouble.
  137. STATEMENT OF POLICE OFFICER CARNES, WITNESS AND ARRESTING OFFICER

  139. I was off duty on the morning of MM-DD-YY. At approximately 00:00 I was
  140. browsing in the Southside Store housewares department when I saw someone
  141. behaving suspiciously near the cashier's counter. I watched this person
  142. lean over the counter and take what appeared to be a woman's purse and
  143. start to walk away. I called out "STOP" and then ran after the suspect as
  144. he dashed down the escalator. I followed him out of the store and
  145. arrested him immediately outside the main store entrance. I took
  146. possession of the purse and brought the suspect back into the store and
  147. then to the security department's office. I advised the suspect and
  148. then took his statement. I handed the suspect over to Patrol Officer
  149. Knowels who responded to the call for police assistance.
